Art brooch created from marine plastics and debris.
Recycled marine plastics, rope and netting have gone into hand making this art brooch.
Collected off our beaches, marine debris, including discarded fishing line, ghost netting, marine rope and also hard plastics are all used in making our ethical jewelry.
What Is This Art Brooch Made From?
We have predominantly used hard plastics, marine rope and fishing line in this piece of art statement jewelry. Forming the feature piece of this art jewelry is a faded green pen cap!! Washed up on our beaches, each piece of marine debris we use has been hand collected, cleaned and finally arranged to create this unique one off piece.
We have added a light coating of varnish to protect the brooch as well as reduce the chance of the plastics breaking down further. All of the plastics we collect are at different stages of deterioration and therefore crumble, split or crack. This makes it challenging to both work with and to also keep the plastics from breaking down further. We, therefore, use a water based glue to hold everything in place and the varnish to protect it.
Why Do You Make Brooches from Man-made Marine Debris?
Deliberately used in making this art brooch are materials which threaten our environment. We make each brooch in a creative way to act as a vehicle for carrying a message as well as prompting awareness. Using pieces of plastic without disguising or changing them allows us furthermore to showcase our message.
Raising awareness of the impact of plastics on our environment is above all why we use these materials the way we do.
