My name comes from the scientific name for a class of extinct fish- Acanthodii
I come with an environmental message and because of that, I’ve been made from marine debris and plastics, including discarded gill netting, plastics, fishing line and rope as well as a fishing fly.
My mission is to show people, in a creative way, the dangers of plastics and to prompt people to think about ways to recycle trash.
In other words – I’ve been made from people’s trash into a unique, one off fashion accessory.
Would you dare to be different enough to wear me?
Would you have the courage to wear trash? Or are you…..
Too busy to do as much recycling as you’d like?
The solution is right here with me.
Just by wearing me, you can pass on the message of recycling and the dangers of plastic. Working together, we can prompt some amazing conversations when people comment on your unusual necklace.
Worried that I may be scratchy to wear?
Don’t be. All you’ll get when wearing me is the odd tickle.
Jo has made me to be a sturdy, lightweight and comfortable necklace.
When you purchase me, my full story comes with me, so you can learn a bit more about me.
Meet Acanthi, An Ethical Bespoke and Hand Made Necklace
We have hand made this ethical bespoke and hand made necklace from marine debris using recycled man made materials, especially discarded marine rope and gill netting. Marine trash, including discarded gill netting, pieces of plastic, as well as fishing line and a fishing fly, are key components in Acanthi’s makeup. A bio resin shell acts as part of her center feature and sits among the tangle of netting, debris and pieces of plastic. A piece of drift wood with some small feathers add to the scene. All these components have subsequently been collected from our beaches and waterways.
Hand made Acanthi, an ethical bespoke and hand made necklace.
Hand made from discarded marine rope which forms her base cord, Acanthi also has a wide selection of man made marine debris in her makeup, and subsequently represents an underwater scene that is almost entirely made from trash.
Acanthi is a dainty and lightweight piece that won’t scratch or itch but simply tickles you with her fishing line. Made to be sturdy, her feature pieces have, in addition, all been hand stitched into place.
She doesn’t scratch at all as she has been carefully hand made to be comfortable and also lightweight to wear.
A message from Acanthi.
Hello.
My name’s Acanthi, which comes from the Latin word for a class of extinct fish, Acanthii.
I started life as a basic piece of discarded marine rope, which was then attached to my stainless-steel findings.
Like most of Jo’s Gaia series necklaces, I portray a scene. In my case, its a scene that represents the relationship between the ocean and sea birds as well as the threat of extinction to a range of bird and fish life through plastic waste.
You will notice in most of Jo’s pieces that she includes man-made waste as well as small pieces of natural material such as the shells. She does this deliberately for several reason. To draw attention to the imbalance between man and his environment, the impact this has on marine life and subsequently us, and to finally challenge our attitudes to nature.
