A message from Trea
Hello,
My name is Trea and this is my story.
I have been named after the Australian flat oyster whose binomial name is Ostrea angasi.
Oysters and mussels are ecosystem engineers creating, modifying and also maintaining coastal shellfish reefs, which are an important habitat for a range of other marine organisms. Shellfish reefs are one of Australia’s most threatened ocean ecosystems with 90–99 % having disappeared during the 1800s and early 1900s. There is only 1 flat oyster location left out of 118 known historical locations. This one is at Tasmania’s Georges Bay.
My pendant, with the small shells and pieces of plastic inside it represents a round shell, just like the round shell of the flat oyster. Both the flat oyster and my plastic bottle top have small treasures nestled inside them – one has the living oyster and the other has dead pieces of shell or plastic.
My message is about the long term actions of humans on living organisms within our environment.
With love,
Trea
