“Trea”, a hand made necklace with a conscience.
Meet Trea, a hand made necklace using recycled materials. Created to be a one off fashion statement, she is also an ethical piece of jewellery. Collected from our beaches, marine debris such as discarded fishing line and marine plastics, form the key materials used in making Trea.
Recycled and Hand Made Trea.
Hand braided from discarded fishing line, Trea’s cord forms the foundation for this quirky piece of ethical and wearable art. Featured in her necklace is a pale yellow plastic bottle top, along with pieces of small plastic. Hidden in amongst these pieces of plastic are 2 small shells, along with some recycled beads.
Sent to you with love, Trea also brings her own personal story to help you understand the message she brings.
Trea is a dainty and lightweight hand made necklace that won’t scratch or itch but simply tickles you with her fishing line. Her feature pieces have been hand stitched into place to, above all, make her sturdy and resilient.
A message from Trea
My name is Trea and this is my story.
I have been named after the Australian flat oyster whose binomial name is Ostrea angasi.
Oysters and mussels are ecosystem engineers creating, modifying and also maintaining coastal shellfish reefs, which are an important habitat for a range of other marine organisms. Shellfish reefs are one of Australia’s most threatened ocean ecosystems with 90–99 % having disappeared during the 1800s and early 1900s. There is only 1 flat oyster location left out of 118 known historical locations. This one is at Tasmania’s Georges Bay.
My pendant, with the small shells and pieces of plastic inside it represents a round shell, just like the round shell of the flat oyster. Both the flat oyster and my plastic bottle top have small treasures nestled inside them – one has the living oyster and the other has dead pieces of shell or plastic.
My message is about the long term actions of humans on living organisms within our environment.
Marine plastics [ bottle top and small pieces] collected off local beaches, recycled fishing line sourced from local council recycling center, recycled beads.
