Creative Recycling With A Difference Has So Much To Offer
Creative recycling has always been a passion of mine, along with creative thinking and problem solving. Recycling with a difference came later as I started to build my business. Combining all three elements into a business was the tricky bit.
It wasn’t until I really dug deep and identified my core values that they clicked together. Having nurturing, integrity, being connected, enlightened and imaginative as business values, allowed my creative recycling business to emerge.
Hand made one off pieces created from man made marine debris are the heart and soul of Nu4uCreative. Starting with basic rope and plastic earrings, I have braided, woven and stitched my way towards now making statement necklaces which I’m proud to put my name to.
I’d like to introduce you to one of them. Her name is Alycona and she’d like to tell you a little about herself.
My name is Alcyona and this is my story.
My name comes from the order of soft corals, Alcyonacea and I represent the beauty that is our coral reefs.
Jo has deliberately used marine debris and recycled fishing line to make me because they are the very things that threaten our marine life and environment.
Hand braided from 2 different types of recycled fishing line, my base cord holds and supports all the other pieces which form me.
My central, feature piece of knotted and frayed rope, representing my order of soft corals, was collected off a beach on the Sunshine Coast. Wrapped around this is some frayed ghost netting, also collected off our beaches. Some more frayed marine rope holds all of this in place.
Both Jo and I thought that we needed to include ghost netting in me because it’s such a deadly and insidious killer in our seas. Its soft, frayed beauty as it floats through the sea belies its deadly role.
Hand stitched in place with recycled fishing line, as much of me as possible has been ethically handmade from recycled materials and marine debris.
Though I am a piece of wearable art, I’m also an ambassador. My role is to promote conversations and discussions when worn by you. This way you and I can work together at promoting the welfare of our seas and reefs.
